Pence’s competitors shield him over Jan. 6: ‘Mike did his responsibility’
GOP presidential applicants had been confronted with a key query Wednesday night: Did Mike Pence do the right thing on Jan. 6?
“Absolutely,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said, who was the primary candidate to answer the query.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum agreed with Scott, even though Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis danced around the query.
“It’s no longer approximately Jan. 6, 2021, it’s approximately Jan. 20, 2025, whilst the president is going to take workplace,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis later clarified and stated “Mike did his obligation. I got no beef with him.”
Christie interrupted the controversy moderators to make his factor recognized: “Mike Pence stood for the Constitution.”
“He deserves not grudging credit, he merits our thank you as Americans for placing his oath of office and the Constitution of the US before non-public, political and unfair pressure and the argument we need to have in this birthday celebration before we are able to flow onto the problems that Ron pointed out is we need to dispense with the person that stated we want to suspend the Constitution to place ahead his political career,” Christie stated.
Pence has defended his actions on Jan. 6 and has stated former President Donald Trump “had no proper to overturn the election” on Jan. 6. Then-Vice President Pence refused Trump’s strain to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory when presiding over the certification of the election outcomes.
“I made it clear and hoped that the troubles surrounding the 2020 election and the controversies round Jan. 6 could not come to this, come to criminal proceedings,” Pence stated. “The American people deserve to recognise that the president asked me in his request that I reject or return votes. He asked me to place him over the Constitution and I selected the Constitution.”
